Steve on the beach
Date: 04/21/2006
The sand was very firm yet soft. It was not like any other sand I remember walking on. Kind of like walking on a gymnastics mat.
Steve walking away

With footprints following. Notice the foam to the right. That is how far the waves went just a few seconds before. Then, all the water retreated far away.
The town of Piha
Date: 04/21/2006
I guess it's the town. It is just a small bunch of houses and a food stand.
Town plus Rock

Equals photo of town and rock.
Crater
Date: 04/21/2006
A bad shot of the crater at the top of Mt. Eden. Later we saw a man throwing a stick to his dog in the crater and made him retrieve it.

The road to Piha
Date: 04/21/2006
Not quite as winding as the road to Hana or the road around West Maui, but close. And remember, we were driving on the other side of the road.
Steve above Piha

Still above the beach. We'll get to the beach soon.
Beach at Piha
Date: 04/21/2006
See I told you we'd be at the beach soon. The waves were very intense here. Surfers, swimmers, and fishermen occasionally get swept out to sea here. It is a very deceptive beach, because the slope is so gentle that it seems very calm at times, but then a wave will suddenly come all the way up the beach.
Waves
Date: 04/21/2006
The waves can be very chaotic here.
Surfer
Date: 04/21/2006
Here is a surfer enjoying the powerful waves. They are not as big as the North Shore of Hawaii, but they are still pretty powerful.

Check out the very gentle slope of the black (some say brownish black) sand.

Nice view, even for an overcast day. It actually cleared up a bit for us. The clouds were moving fast.

Not much more to it than that.

Steve and Kelly on Mt. Eden

Steve and Kelly on Mt. Eden with downtown Auckland in the background. It was pretty windy up there. Kelly was a bit cold, thus the sweater, and the huddling. Oh wait, it was our honeymoon. The huddling was just for fun.
Another View from Mt. Eden
Date: 04/21/2006
It was actually a pretty hazy day for Auckland, so this is not the clearest view.
One Tree Hill
Date: 04/21/2006
This is a view of One Tree Hill from Mt. Eden. Don't look for a tree there however, because a Maori activist cut it down. All that is left is the obelisk monument.
Another Hazy View of Auckland
Date: 04/21/2006
From Mt. Eden still. I bet you wish it were clearer. I do.
